Erving Goffman compares society with stage drama.
In a play, there are component of 'on stage' where actors have to follow scripts given to them. This is when individuals have to follow scripts. However, there is also an 'off stage' component where inidividuals are less conscious of the role they are playing and the effect of society on them is minimal.
This idea supports the Micro-theory that individuals are not totally puppets of society, they have relative freedom and choice.
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional.
